The grid is susceptible to errors. It can go down anytime. Disasters can also bring it down. Surviving when the grid goes down requires a good deal of preparation. One needs to plan for this undesirable eventuality. Failure to plan will lead to consequences. It might mean a family enduring cold winter nights because of lack of electricity. One should never put too much faith in something made by human hands. The grid system is a work of men. Thus, there is nothing like a hundred percent guarantee.

Electricity is life. It powers homes, businesses and industries. The primary supply of electricity is the power grid that also supplies water and natural gas. This critical infrastructure is guarded and monitored round the clock. This does not mean that it is out of harm's way. Anything can happen and cause entire cities and states not to have electricity. There is also the possibility of a national blackout.

Failure of the grid in the past is proof enough that it can still fail in future. The main reason to anticipate future failure is poor maintenance of the entire system. Some parts of it have been neglected for years because of lack of enough federal funding. It seems, preventative maintenance is not the case but rather the personnel involved simply react to problems instead of preventing them in the first place.

In most cases of power failure, the forces of nature are to blame. Hurricanes usually bring down series of power lines. The destructive nature of strong winds is well documented. Natural phenomena is beyond the scope of humans. The much that men can do is to put in place sufficient emergency preparedness measures. This will facilitate survival during bleak times.

Hacking is never out of the question. This phenomenon has gained popularity in recent times. It is the ultimate act of sabotage and involves criminals bringing down banks and government institutions. Such deviants can also compromise the electric transmission system. This can result to permanent or temporary power system failure. The real threat that hacking poses justifies adequate preparation measures.

Surviving will be very easy if there is enough heat and light in a house. Unfortunately, most families depend on electricity as their one and only source of energy. Electricity should be the primary source but there should also be a secondary source such as propane or kerosene. A heater that uses any of these fuels will come in handy.

Prolonged power failure will also lead to a food crisis because of destroyed food production and the inability to transport the available foods. Therefore, one should always stock enough dry foods. There is need to have a plan of how one will provide for his family during a disaster. Emergency food supply will come in handy. One should not tell other people about his supplies.

One should expect the unexpected. Disaster can strike at any moment. A total grid failure is a reality that can happen one day. A wise person will not see take this issue lightly but will instead make the necessary preparations. When there is no electricity, some survival skills will come in handy. There will also be need to have particular supplies.
