A genre in literature that focuses on the psychological state of its characters is categorized under the thriller genre. This writing style is also often associated with Gothic literature and detective fiction because of having the same surrealistic elements. Aside from that, it also contains components of mystery, drama, action, and horror.

A reader can tell when the story they are reading falls under this category when it has strong elements of existentialism and contemplates reality, humanity and the identity of a person. Perhaps the most important element here is the use of characters that will help make the story complete. Stated below are the top five characters that a psychological thriller book has, that readers have probably noticed before.

Aside from having a substantial plot and applying various writing techniques, the makings of an excellent novel include having complex and interesting characters. This is a detrimental aspect because without them, a plot cannot exist and there would be nothing to write about. That is why authors should place a lot of thought into them when composing.

The main protagonist is generally the main character in most thrillers and is the person that is focused on the most. Since these types of stories usually centers around crime and the law, protagonists will usually have the role of a police officer, an investigator, or a reporter. Other authors will turn this rule around and make it the victim of the antagonist instead who is struggling to overcome their situation.

Since protagonists are the most important people in these types of stories, they will usually have a set of people who are support their background. This includes a sidekick, partner in crime, or more conventional roles such as friends and family. These roles are created mainly to support the details concerning the protagonist.

The villain in the book is just as important and is usually the harbinger of bad news and chaos. Without them, there would be no conflict and nothing to solve which would make the novel boring and stale. Thanks to them, an interesting plot is made and there are big chances of character development. The roles of antagonists are usually that of murderers or law breaking individuals.

Antagonists will also have their own set of people that back up the details concerning their background. They are most commonly portrayed as henchmen or minions and aid their master in completing missions and acts of violence. The existence of these roles is to give the reader a sense of how much power and influence an antagonist has in their world.

Sometimes, authors will also include a love interest. Although this is not necessary in most plot lines, authors do it anyway to add a sense of humanity in the story. This also allows the reader to sympathize and relate to what they are reading. However, there are also some books that need a love interest in order to further the plot.

All in all, there are a multitude of roles in thriller novellas that authors create and these are the most commonly used. When writing any kind of story under whichever kind of genre, it is always important to give make complex characters that are interesting to read about. Without these titular fixtures in novels, there would be no story to tell in the first place.
