Few people have the luxury of being able to settle down with a good book for a few hours. Life is so busy that more often than not people find their entertainment from the television or streaming services. Thankfully there is still lots of great books available and many thriller novels find their way onto our screens as movie productions.

Many of the best authors in this genre have their work adapted for the cinema. The format lends itself to the silver screen with tension, a hero and often a love interest as well. While the film makers often do justice do the book and produce an entertaining film, there are many instances where the book is still better.

A book allows the reader to form their own image of the characters and scenes. The author can use description and language to conjure up the stunning landscapes or gory details of a crime scene. The reader's mind can imagine everything whereas on screen this task is done by the director or special effects team and the imagination is made redundant.

Many authors will produce a whole series of books based on the same main character. This character can become almost a real person as you learn what drives them and can picture them in your minds eye. The dark haired lady detective or the loan wanderer constantly finding trouble have been so well described they are firmly imprinted on your mind.

If you have a picture of your favorite character and that hero is portrayed by an actor who looks nothing like them, as a reader you can feel a little betrayed. Anyone who has read the book knows they should be Irish and red haired not a blonde Australian. The producers often deviate from the original work to try and enhance the box office sales to the detriment of the author's work.

Sometimes however, seeing a movie and enjoying it can lead people back to the original novel. From there they might read the whole series or branch out to other authors. If a movie can bring more people to the world of books then this must be a good thing. Reading broadens the mind and improves literacy, comprehension and spelling.

Most books are published both in hardcopy and an online format. There are bookstores online where you can either purchase hardcopy by mail order or get the online version. They offer user reviews and synopsis so you have an idea of the style and story before you buy. As a regular customer they will also offer choices you might like or suggests things other people are reading.

If you are a tech person then there are plenty of apps available for your phone or tablet which allow you to download and read books. There are sites which promote new authors by offering their work for free in this format. Some older works which are now out of copyright can also be downloaded free of charge. A novel that is over one hundred years old can still be a really good thriller.
